I remember that my Uncle William “Jimmy” Laurie and Aunt Catherine Laurie owned a “hotel” in Stony Creek. A few years ago, when I still lived in CT I took a ride by the place and it appeared to be an apartment house now. It was on the left when headed for the end of the road. My memories tell me that there was a very long dinning room table with tall dining chairs. I am the proud owner of two of these magnificant chairs. I don’t know what ever happened to all the others.
I saw your message at the SC Museum web site. I remember the Lauries, I believe Catherine had a limp.I was never old enough to go into the Three Elms, as it was called, but it was a pretty wild place at one time. If you should have any other memories of Stony Creek or have any artifacts the museum would be glad to have them. I am currently the treasurer and we have found a home for the museum, the old catholic church. Much work needs to be done to get it in shape and we are currently trying to get donations for renovations.
I remember that there was a fire. I think it was in the early or mid 1950′s. There was another frame house behind the hotel which burned to the grounds. I think the Reveaux’s lived in it. The Three Elms lost a upper floor from the fire. As a little kid I remember once the fire was subdued the crowd that gathered outside noted that the firemen were spending a unusual amoount of time inside, moping up.
Some say the kitchen and bar required special attention. I wouldn’t know, I was just a little kid.
Third photo from the top.
The photo with a group of people standing in front of a housw with a flag prominently displayed.
Can anyone tell me the location of the house?
Owen , that house is at the corner of Long Pt Rd & Thimble Isl Rd (Main St to you). I believe it is the Lindquist family and my Great Grand Father is 2nd from right.
